1992 Audi 80e automatic. Oil warning light came on and power lost

Driving normally when oil warning light came on. Added 1 ltr of oil and commenced driving again. Oil warning light came on again and engine noise apparent. Further ltr of oil added. Drove on. Car started chugging like a tractor and power was gradually lost. Any suggestions?
